Glossary of Terms / FAQ

POD = Print on Demand
3 P's = Production, Printing, Promotion
Galleys = An author's submitted manuscript on which production work has begun.
ISBN 13 = 13 digit International Standard Book Number. This is the newest format replacing the older 10 digit numbers.

* How long does the process take? Each new title is an individual project and each project is as unique as its author. As a rule, we keep the same pace as the author.

* Will my book be at a major book store chain? ABP can not guarantee that your book will be offered for sale at a major chain. But through our distribution channels your book is made available to major book chains.

* How will book stores know my book is available? ABP will place your book in front of 25 - 30,000 buyers from major bookstore chains to small "mom and pop" operations.

* Will you pay ME to publish my manuscript? ABP does subsidy print some manuscripts. However, don't be fooled by other publishers who offer to "pay" you for your manuscript (royalties). Read their information carefully and educate yourself. For example, one publisher recently stated that in 7 years of business and serving 25,000 authors they just passed the ONE MILLION DOLLAR royalty payout mark. Let's do the math 25,000 Authors and 1,000,000 dollars in royalty payments. That would equal an average of $40.00 for your book (and a keepsake 7-year contract).

* Now for the most important question . . . COST? Of all the  questions asked a publisher, probably one of the most common is "how much does it cost to publish a book?" As with any industry, several factors come into play. Some of these include:

* Number of pages
* Type of binding
* Hard cover or paperback?
* Illustrations/pictures
* Number of copies

Once we have seen your manuscript and can determine what needs to be done to it prior to being printed for publication, and knowing certain things like, is the book simply a black and white text, or an all color book, ABP is then able to begin a cost work-up on your book. We also need to know how many books will be printed, and will the book be a POD book or an offset printed book. What size will the book be and will it be a hardback cover, saddle stitched or a perfect bind. The number of pages must also be determined. Are there pictures? If so, how many? How many special scans will be needed for those extra items you have or want included in your book? These are some of the items ABP and you, the author, will have to decide upon before we can give you an accurate quote. Anything less would be nothing more than guess work and we would be doing you a disservice instead of providing you with an accurate figure. You will get accurate information from us. If someone else sounds too good to be true, trust us, it's too good to be true. Get what you want committed to paper and read the fine lines of any publishing contracts, and look for the proverbial hook or hidden clause which will not hold a publisher responsible for something that should not have gone wrong with your publishing. A good "yardstick" to use when pricing is this - a 6x9 size book,  up to 125 pages, black and white text with no pictures should run approximately $2500.00 to complete the project. Remember, that's edited, cover design and set-up, print set-up and your ISBN and book title listed with Ingram and Amazon, Barnes & Noble and all other Internet based book-sellers.

When you feel the time is right for you to publish, give us a call or send an email and then submit your manuscript to us for review. We look forward to hearing from you and reading your work. Come to us with ideas for your work, with excitement about getting your manuscript published and with questions that need solid answers and accurate guidance and direction. Lets work together in making your book publishing effort a pleasure and a learning experience. Be part of the process, not left out in the dark.
